  • General collection guidelines:
    • Great emphasis is placed on collecting materials published by labor unions and workers' organizations and pamphlet and fugitive material, as well as materials about labor in Illinois. The library welcomes donations of collective bargaining agreements.
    • The dominant language of the collection is English. A few Western European languages are represented, and materials in other languages are acquired very selectively.
    • The collection focuses on the late nineteenth and later centuries, because labor movements and labor unions are mainly phenomena of those time periods, although other periods are represented.
    • Geographical coverage is world-wide, but the collection is strongest in materials on North America, Western Europe, and Asia.

The library also has extensive uncataloged collections. These include:

  • a Vertical File: 140 file drawers containing pamphlet and other fugitive material arranged by topic and by union name
  • Newspapers published by international unions, state labor bodies, and Illinois local unions
  • Collective bargaining agreements
  • Institute theses and dissertations
  • Looseleaf services, primarily relating to labor and employment law
  • Illinois State Labor Relations Board and Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board materials
  • a Newspaper Clipping File: 9 file drawers containing historical material emphasizing unions in Illinois
  • Unpublished arbitration awards

Although not a significant portion of the collections, the library's nonprint collections include:

  • Microfilm and microfiche: the library owns a large collection of labor union constitutions, convention proceedings, and official documents in microform as well as microform sets of other archival materials. Additional labor-related microform collections are located in the main library Bookstacks.
  • Audiotapes: of colloquium speakers at the Institute
  • Videotapes: the library makes no effort to acquire videotapes and holds only videotapes donated to the library. Videotapes on labor topics needed for instruction are recommended for purchase and located in the Media Center in the Undergraduate Library. These are cataloged and can located by searching the online catalog.
