HEBREW AND YIDDISH

This page lists the Hebrew and Yiddish vernacular materials at the UIUC Library and notes the locations, call number ranges, and approximate volume counts. Please note that the term "column" refers to one vertical three-foot wide and nine-foot high unit of shelving. Please note that Modern Hebrew Literature is classified by the Library of Congress Classification system. All other call numbers below are Dewey Decimal Classification.


HEBREW


Classical Hebrew

Linguistics Studies: 2 1/2 columns (492.4-492.48) in basement of Stacks West

  Tanakh/Torah: interspersed among 12 1/2 columns (221) of books in various languages on deck 3 of Stacks East

  Torah/Talmud/Mishnah/Midrash: 4 columns (296.09-296.31) on deck 3 of Stacks East


Modern Hebrew

Literature: 18 columns (PJ45) on first deck of Asian Library Stacks (ASX).  Please see the Hebrew Alcove located in the West End of the Modern Languages and Linguistics Library.  This Alcove contains selected reference sources and literature.

Linguistics Studies: 3 shelves (492, Dewey Decimal System and PJ47 and PJ48, Library of Congress) on second deck (ASX)

 Additional new locations are being provided in MDX (Modern Languages and Linguistics Library Stacks) and MDR (Modern Languages Reference)


YIDDISH

Belles Lettres: ca. 2,000 cataloged volumes (892.49) on deck 6.5 of Stacks West
ca. 100 volumes (296.025) on deck 3 of Stacks East

Linguistics Studies:

Awaiting Processing:
ca. 4,000 volumes, mainly received from the Chicago Public Library
ca. 800 volumes received as a gift from the Van Cortlandt Workmen's Circle Community House Library, Bronx NY
ca. 400 volumes received as part of an exchange with University College, London
