Bibliography Committee
The Jewish Studies Bibliography Committee of the University Library coordinates the
collection of materials in support of teaching and research related to Jewish studies
across many disciplines. Librarian selectors on the committee manage the funds and
endowments in place for the acquisition of relevant books and journals in all formats, and
seek special grants to purchase expensive items. Members of the committee are active in
the procurement of gifts in kind.
The committee maintains regular contact with the Program in Jewish Culture and Society and
with the endowed Drobny Chairs for History, Religious Studies, Yiddish Literature, and
Anthropology. In addition, the Library supports important programs involving Modern Hebrew
linguistics and literary studies.
The University Library's Jewish studies collections are in general very strong,
particularly with regard to primary works by American and European Jewish authors,
histories of the Jewish people, and religious studies. Vernacular materials in Classical
Hebrew, Modern Hebrew, and Yiddish are included in the Librarys outstanding
collections. Recent acquisitions and gifts have helped create an impressive Yiddish
collection, especially strong in belles lettres.
Persons wishing to make financial donations in support of the Jewish studies
collections of the University Library, or persons wishing to donate books or other
materials to the Library should contact Mary Stuart, Chair of the Jewish Studies Bibliography Committee or Lyn Jones, Director of Development
and Public Affairs, University of Illinois Library.
