Alternative Press Collection

Description: Library has Unit 1 - 19 (2003) Another annually updated microfilm collection of alternative newspapers and journals from the 1980s and 1990s. This collection has an annotated list that includes all titles in units 1 through 19 collection, arranged in alphabetical order and by subject. Browsing will give you an idea of the diversity of alternative press publishing going on in the United States today.

Underground Press Collection (1963-1985) and Supplements

Call Number: FILM 071.3 Un2
Description: Including 550 titles, this is the main collection of anti-establishment and alternative press from the 1960s and early 1970s which provides a rich source of primary historical material for studying the development of the counter culture and anti-war movements, the civil rights, black and Chicano militant movements, the women's liberation and gay/lesbian movements. This collection includes not only large circulation presses but hundreds of smaller publications by students, activists, radical scholars, revolutionary organizations as the Students for a Democratic Society, the Black Panthers, and Servicemen Opposed to Vietnam War. Also included are lesbian, American Indian, and Asian-American activist presses.
Supplements: The Hoover Supplement (FILM 071.3 Un24), introduced in 1988, provides missing issues to 88 of the titles in the original collection while adding 178 new titles. Titles were filmed from the newspaper archives at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace.

The University of Missouri--Columbia Supplement (FILM 071.3 UN1m) contains 123 titles from the early 1960s through the late 1970s not previously available in microfilm. Based on the collection at the Columbia School of Journalism, this is a regionally diverse collection of student and activist publications. Views represented in these publications are primarily from the radical left, though conservative and white extremist perspectives are also represented.
