The Library’s Interlibrary Loan web site (http://www.library.uiuc.edu/irrc/) offers a web form for submitting photocopy and loan requests, as well as information on the status of requests you have previously submitted, through their ILLiad system.
(Note that we can obtain material from many other academic libraries in the state through the regular online catalog, Illinet Online, without going through ILL. When you obtain a book or journal through Illinet Online, it is not considered "interlibrary loan," since the transaction takes place within our own online catalog, even though the material may be coming to you from Northern Illinois University, Illinois State, or one of the other 65 participating libraries. The list of libraries in the consortium is available at http://www.ilcso.uiuc.edu/Web/About/ilcsolibs.html.)
We can also place ILL requests directly through WorldCat. This is a "union" or combined catalog for thousands of libraries that share cataloging records. Note that you can search the title of a journal in this database to find out which libraries own the journal, but to identify articles in a journal, you need to use one of the article databases. To get to WorldCat, start at the Library Gateway (http://www.library.uiuc.edu/index.html). Choose “Off Campus Catalogs,” and scrolldown to WorldCat.
The Center for Research Libraries in Chicago is a consortium of academic and research libraries that lends research resources to member institutions. Supported by member dues, CRL buys material that is out of reach of individual libraries due to cost, mainly large microform sets. CRL lends items from its collections for up to one year if there are no other requests for the item. Requests to borrow CRL materials should be placed using the regular ILL web form (add a note indicating that the material is held at CRL). To search the CRL catalog, go to “Quick Links” on the History, Philosophy and NewspaperLibrary web site (http://www.library.uiuc.edu/hix/index.html).
The Library will provide you with free copies of articles from journals for which we have cancelled our subscription. This service is provided by a contract with Inside Web, operated by the British Library. Please contact me if you need an article from a journal to which we no longer subscribe or from a volume of a journal that is missing or at the bindery. I can order a copy of the article that will be delivered to you electronically. Material is usually delivered by Inside Webin 2-4 days.
Dissertations: Dissertations from other institutions are no longer available as regular ILL items. For purposes of access, the key distinction is between pre-1997 dissertations and 1997- dissertations. If you need a copy of a dissertation written at another university before 1997, you can place the order through ILL, which will obtain a paper copy from a commercial vendor. The fee for this service is $15. You should provide the full citation and order number from Dissertation Abstracts/Digital Dissertations (available via the Library Gateway under Online Research Resources). If you contact me before placing your request with ILL, I can order the dissertation for you and charge the $15 fee to the History Library’s book funds. You are allowed to keep the dissertation for an extended loan period, after which time it will be cataloged and added to the Library's collections.
The full text of dissertations accepted by most U.S. institutions from 1997 to the present are available free of charge as PDF documents through Digital Dissertations. |
