Proposal for a Core List of Geoscience Books
Shaun Hardy and Dena Hanson - 30 minutes

If you've searched recently for a list of the "best geoscience books" for your library or to recommend to faculty or students, you've doubtless come up empty-handed. In spite of up-to-date compilations in related fields such as astronomy and chemistry, the available core lists in the earth sciences are decades out of date. Several GSIS members have expressed interest in compiling a new geoscience core list as a collaborative project. Shaun Hardy and Dena Hanson will lead a discussion on the feasibility and desirability of such a project. Many issues need to be considered: target audience, scope, inclusion criteria, format, publication medium, copyright, update frequency, etc. Samples of "model" core lists will be presented. The decision to proceed or not will depend on your input and willingness to contribute.
