Professional Experience

2006 – Present   Associate University Librarian for Collections & Associate Dean of Libraries: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, IL

Reporting to the University Librarian, the AUL for Collections works closely with members of the Library’s administration, subject specialists, and central services personnel to develop and manage the Library’s collections. Duties include: providing leadership in all aspects of collection development and management; overseeing administration of $14-million materials budget in coordination with over fifty subject specialists; coordinating collection policy; advocating on behalf of the Library’s collections and their needs to campus, local, state, and national benefactors; working closely with members of the Library’s Acquisitions and Cataloging and Metadata Units; articulating future directions for the Library’s collection development and management practices; chairing the Collection Development Committee and Content Access Policy & Technology Committee (CAPT); serving on the Library’s Administrative Council, Budget Group, and institutional repository administrative group; coordinating license agreement and approval plans with Acquisitions personnel; and overseeing Preservation and Conservation Program and Gifts Processing.

The Head of Preservation coordinates preservation policy, works with library personnel on developing aspects of the program ranging from daily operations to strategic initiatives, and participates in development activities, grant and funding initiatives, and other programs as required. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Collections, the incumbent works with the conservation librarian to develop and administer a comprehensive preservation program for all materials within the University Library. Direct responsibilities: contracting and managing budgets for the Preservation and Conservation Program; managing projects; developing educational programming; overseeing disaster preparedness and response, commercial binding, preservation reformatting, deacidification, and contracted conservation; assessing collections; participating in digital preservation management initiatives; representing the institution to external organizations and the program’s needs within the institution; and seeking grants, internal, and external resources to support these programs.

2000 – 2001      Preservation Reformatting Librarian: University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY

Management of Reprographics Department (7.5 FTE), including supervision and evaluation; oversight of budgets, income, and supplies; management of high-quality, production-oriented workflow; development of policies and procedures to reflect and uphold both national and local standards, including the implementation of RLG and ANSI/AIIM-compliant filming procedures; creation and maintenance of documentation and production statistics; planning new services; assisting in the administration of NEH-funded SOLINET project; management of locally-held master negative collection, including assessment and preservation treatment; development of new reformatting options and imaging initiatives for paper-based library materials; representing department in facilities and administrative meetings.

2000                 Consultant: Preservation Technologies, LP, Cranberry Township, PA

Completed a pilot survey of the National Library of Medicine’s serials collections to ascertain suitability for mass deacidification. Project included: selection, evaluation, data entry, and tabulation.

1999 – 2000      Special Projects Assistant: Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA                       

Assisted in the administration of a Carnegie Corporation grant preserving collections related to industrialization and Andrew Carnegie’s legacy in Western Pennsylvania. Prepared nitrate and safety film negatives for reformatting and long-term storage, books for microfilming, scrapbooks and monographs for preservation photocopying, conservation, and mass deacidification; performed quality control on reformatted photographs, negatives, monographs, and scrapbooks; conducted appraisals and collection assessments; created databases; performed basic repairs on monographs; participated in the planning and facilitation of a preservation symposium.

1999 – 2000      Graduate Assistant: University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA

Learned fundamental book repair and preservation techniques, including re-casing, tipping-in pages and pockets, repairing torn pages, and encapsulating materials. Completed two semester-long field placements that focused on (a) assisting in microfilm preparation and quality control for the University’s NEH-funded microfilming project and creating corresponding documentation, and (b) completing a collection survey of government documents and making treatment recommendations.

1999 – 2000      Graduate Student Assistant: University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA

Conducted extensive research and editorial activities in support of guest editor Elizabeth Yakel for American Archivist (63:2) Fall 2000; tabulated and organized survey data (KALIPER Project); updated faculty web site; provided course support; other duties as assigned.

1999 – 2000      Information Ethics Fellow: University of Pittsburgh, PA

Assisted information ethics professor with research and course preparation; participated in the planning of the annual Dean’s Forum on Information Ethics.

1998 – 1999      Library Technician: United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington, DC
Advanced from initial Museum Technician’s post to Library Technician’s position focused on providing acquisitions and copy-cataloging services focused on foreign language, out-of-print, and rare books; participated in the implementation of the acquisitions and cataloging modules of the library’s integrated on-line system and used system’s circulation module; identified and proposed solutions to workflow and system problems; completed purchase orders; monitored accounts; maintained records. Additional responsibilities included: providing reference services; organizing storage facilities; implementing minor preservation measures; preparing volunteer work assignments; communicating with vendors and donors; acknowledging donations.
