Proposal to Move AAL to HPNL

May 13, 2008

As was noted in the cover message to the New Service Model Report, ideas for new models will continue to arise and will be considered seriously.  Today, the Executive Committee voted unanimously to support a proposal submitted by Tom Weissinger and Mary Stuart to move the Afro-Americana Library to the History, Philosophy, and Newspaper Library.  It is clear that the services and programs of both units overlap in significant ways and that Library users will benefit from both closer collaboration and co-location.  There are major affinities between the two units in terms of clientele served, instructional sessions provided, and materials acquired.  By relocating the AAL reference collection to HPNL, users will have access to these materials in the evenings and weekends; users will also benefit from the combined expertise of the personnel in both units.

Discussions with the African American Studies Department, the African American Cultural Center, student groups and other constituencies have elicited favorable support for the proposed consolidation.  Tom and Mary will continue to work with them and with colleagues in Area Studies, the Arts & Humanities division, and other groups within and outside the Library to work out specific aspects of the consolidation.
