In order to find the material that is identified in a search of FIAF, you will need to
interpret the citation and identify the essential elements for use in the Library's
Online
Catalog and the English
Library Periodical List.
NOTE: Some non-essential elements have been omitted from the example below in the
interest of clarity. Most citations are longer and include more elements than are displayed
below. I have put an asterisk by those parts of the citation that you would use in finding the
materials in the Library.
All of the citations given in FIAF are for articles in Journals.
Example of a typical FIAF citation:
*JN: Wide Angle;
*SO: Wide Angle Vol.XIV nr.1 (Jan 1992); p.4-18
*PY: 1992
CP: United States
LA: English
AU: Telotte, J.P.
TI: The fantastic realism of film noir: Kiss me deadly.
AB: Considers the suitability of the label 'realism' for the film noir genre, drawing
on the Expressionism-influenced "Kiss me deadly".
AT: Article; Illustrations; Bibliography
FD: Aldrich, Robert
JN stands for Journal title. In this case the name of the journal the article is found
in is Wide Angle.
SO stands for Source information. The source information gives you the exact volume and/or
issue number of the journal Wide Angle that this article appears in.
PY is the Year in which the article was Published.
LA denotes the Language the article is written in.
AU stands for the Author of the article, in this case the author is J.P. Telotte.
AB is short for Abstract, or the summary, of what the article contains/discusses.
AT signifies the Article Type. An article can be a a review, an interview, a book review,
an obituary, and so forth. Also, this field indicates whether the article contains illustrative
material and/or bibliographic information.
FD indicates the Director whose film is examined in the article.
You can determine whether UIUC owns the journal by clicking on Check for Holdings,
which appears after the citation information. This link will take you directly into the Online Catalog.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The above “Check for Holdings” search may not find the journal, even
if the Library owns it. If the UIUC online catalog reports "No matches," double-check
these results by looking in the English Library Periodicals List, or
check with the English Library staff.
