Frequently asked questions about periodicals at the ESSL

I have confirmed that a particular title is on your list--now where do I find it?

Periodicals are arranged alphabetically (not in call number order) in the main room (Room 100) of the Education and Social Science Library. Current issues (usually the past 1-2 years of a title, depending on how frequently it comes out) are kept on the metal shelves immediately to your left after you pass the reference area. Once journals are removed from the current area, they are bound and placed on the shelves around the edges of the back of the room.

Your list says you have Journal of Teacher Education, but I need an article from 1972, and I don't see that volume on the shelf. Where can I find it?

Generally, the Education and Social Science Library retains the last 5 or 10 years' worth of a journal (check the "Holdings" column in the lists above to determine the period for a particular title). After this point, volumes are usually transferred to Main Stacks. Please note that journals are arranged in call number order in the stacks, so you will need the call number to find your journal. Please also note that journals in the main stacks can be checked out for two weeks to faculty or grad students, so you will want to check the online catalog to make sure the particular volume you need is available. For more information, see this primer on interpreting online catalog records for journals.

I need an article from the Journal of Obscure Research, and can't find it on the ESSL print lists or in the online catalog. What do I do now?

The Education and Social Science Library subscribes to over 1700 periodicals in print, but many more are available online. To check if the library has electronic access to the journal you need, use the Online Research Resources database. (Please note that this database is used to search for journal titles, not specific articles. Please ask a librarian or see the ORR help pages if you need assistance.)

Can I check out journals from the Education and Social Science Library?

Because they receive heavy use, journals can only be checked out for 2 hours (if you are an undergrad or grad student) or 24 hours (if you are a faculty member). Overdue charges are $2/hour.
