General Indexes and Catalogs

UIUC Online Catalog
http://www.library.uiuc.edu/catalog/
Use the "Quick Limits" or "More Limits" features to limit your search to the Government Documents Library collection, which extends back to the late 1970s.  Some subject searches that may be useful and that will pull up older material are "Off-reservation boarding schools --History," "Indian children --Education" and "Indians of North America --Education."
ERIC
http://www.eric.ed.gov/
Use the thesaurus tab at the top of this page to find reports, articles and many other publications about educational issues.  Coverage of this database goes back to the 1960's, with a few earlier materials included.  The reference number next to the title will help you access the reports on microfiche in the Education and Social Science Library, or items may be accessible in print via the online catalog or in one of the library's online databases.  Other interfaces to the same index are available from the UIUC Library's Online Research Resources page: do a title keywords search for "ERIC."

Catalog of U.S. Government Publications
http://catalog.gpo.gov
This is a database of publications cataloged by the U.S. Government Printing Office from 1976 to the present.  It includes the ability to find a library near you that has the publication you are interested in.  Another interface is available from the UIUC Library at http://www.library.uiuc.edu/orr/get.php?instid=258121.

Laws and Regulations

Kappler's Indian Affairs Laws and Treaties
http://digital.library.okstate.edu/kappler/
This website is the online version of an important source compiling laws, treaties, court cases and executive orders relating to Native Americans through 1971.  Use the index to each volume to find material about education.  The print version is available in Main Stacks Government Documents (call no. DOCI1.107).

LexisNexis Congressional
http://www.library.uiuc.edu/orr/get.php?instid=258117
Use this source to find hearings, reports, bills and laws from the U.S. Congress since 1789.  Each choice on the left-hand menu searches different content, and the subject list available from most search screens in this database is the best way to narrow your search.  Most items in this index are either in the UIUC online catalog or the U.S. Serial Set (see below).

U.S. Serial Set Digital Edition
http://www.library.uiuc.edu/orr/get.php?instid=395383
The Serial Set contains reports submitted to and generated by Congress from the 15th Congress (1817) to the present.  This online index contains full text for 1817-1906.  For an index to all Serial Set reports (without links to full text), use LexisNexis Congressional or the print Serial Set Index located in the Government Documents Library (call no. 015.73C759).  Reports through the 60th Congress (1908-1909) are available in microfiche at the Government Documents Library; print versions are in Main Stacks Government Documents and the Law Library for most of the 20th Century.

Statistics

LexisNexis Statistical
http://www.library.uiuc.edu/orr/get.php?instid=258185
Use the "Search Abstracts" screen and the subject list to find statistics published since the 1980s.  Often sources described in this index have been published for decades, so you may be able to use the online catalog to find earlier versions of sources described in this index.

American Indian, Alaska Native Tables from the Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2004-2005
http://www.census.gov/statab/www/sa04aian.pdf
These tables are an example of the kinds of data published about Native Americans in the Statistical Abstract, which has been published since 1878.

American Factfinder
http://factfinder.census.gov/home/saff/main.html?_lang=en
This is the access point for the decennial census and other censuses and surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau.  It is useful for data back to 1990; use the Historical Census Data Browser (see below) or the census volumes in the Government Documents Library for earlier information.

Historical Census Data Browser
http://fisher.lib.virginia.edu/collections/stats/histcensus/
Basic data about population and education tabulated by race is available here for the 1790-1960 population censuses.  Use the print census volumes in the Government Documents Library for more detailed information.
