Note that the collections in Government Documents and Reference are accessible during all hours when the Main Library is open, even when reference librarians are not there to assist you. Hints:

If you can’t find information on your topic for the unit size you want, you may need to jump up one size (national-level data vs. state data vs. county data vs. metropolitan area data vs. city data).

When seeking historical data, look for older versions of current sources. Most sources are updated every 1-5 years, and many online sources have print counterparts (or former versions in print). Search the online catalog for locations of older versions; most are in the main bookstacks -- located behind the Central Circulation desk (Main Library, 2^nd floor, West side). Agency-specific annual statistical sources have more detail than compendia (those works which compile data from many different sources).

Make sure to keep track of sources used, including title and call number. For help in citing your sources, see the online style manuals -- including those for citing electronic sources -- here: http://www.library.uiuc.edu/rex/instruction/styleguide.htm#Online Style Manuals

Don’t hesitate to ask the librarians for help with identifying and using sources appropriate for your search.

For questions about your modeling topic or selection of variables, ask your instructor or teaching assistants, not the librarians.

Start sooner rather than later, in case you have difficulty accessing data or require additional data to make your model work.
