I. How to Use the Lists:

About the lists:

The Econ 173 lists are designed to serve as guides to finding statistical resources in the University of Illinois libraries. Each entry includes a bibliographic reference (author, title, publisher name and date), a call number, a three digit LCS (Library Circulation System) code designating the particular library or libraries that houses the resource, and a brief description of its contents.

Finding the resource: call numbers:

With the exception of the U.S. Government publications in the Government Documents Library (see below) and the Internet sites, most resources on the list have been assigned Dewey Decimal call numbers.

In the Government Documents Library, most U.S. Government titles have Superintendent of Documents, i.e. SuDocs, call numbers. DOC. appears at the beginning of SuDocs call numbers. SuDocs classifies documents according to the U.S. government agency which issues the document: e.g., call numbers for Department of Labor publications begin with L; call numbers for Department of Commerce publications begin with C. U.S. Government documents are thus shelved alphabetically by issuing agency, from Agriculture to Veteran's Administration (Exception: call numbers for Congressional publications begin with Y). They are then shelved in numerical order according to the number which follows the agency letter. Please note the / in SuDocs call numbers: e.g., DOC.C3.134/5: State and Metropolitan Area Data Book , 1991 , appears as a / on the actual publication, while in the Online Catalog and on the lists these / appear as +, i.e., DOC.C3.134+5. Some older U.S. documents still have Dewey Decimal Classification numbers. There are two shelving arrangements in the Government Documents Library--Dewey call numbers (selected older documents, Illinois State Publications and commercially-published reference books) and SuDocs call numbers.

Explanation of "information only, contains no data" notations:

Core and extended lists Internet links, which contain this notation in brackets at the end of their URL, i.e. [information only, contains no data], have been been included for informational purposes only. They give details on the source, such as content, but do not contain numerical data.
