Who We Are

The Government Documents Library is one of 42 departmental libraries of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library, and is the largest and most comprehensive U.S. Depository Library in east-central Illinois. One of the four federal depositories in Illinois' 15th Congressional district and one of two in Champaign County (the University of Illinois Law Library is the other), the Government Documents Library receives 92% of the U.S. government publications currently available through the Depository Library Program and has been a U.S. Depository Library since 1907.  It is also a depository for United Nations documents and Canadian and Illinois government publications.

The collection includes major statistical series on population, housing, transportation, health, business, education, agriculture, and crime; current Congressional bills, documents, hearings, and reports; the United States Code, Federal Register, and the Code of Federal Regulations; government CD-ROMS, including U.S. Census information, the National Trade Data Bank (NTDB), and the Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS); and hundreds of thousands of other documents on nearly every conceivable subject.  The collection also includes a variety of indexes and other access tools for government information, both print and electronic.

Federal Depository Libraries

The United States Government is one of the most prolific and eclectic publishers in the world. The wealth of information produced by federal agencies comprises a valuable and incomparable collection of materials on the government's activities as well as on general and scientific topics. These resources are widely distributed and available to all citizens through a unique system of Depository Libraries.  The Federal Depository Library Program gives the public free access to government information. Each year Depository Libraries select items from a list of more than 6,000 categories of publications and electronic products.

Increasingly, government information and documents are being produced in electronic format, including CD-ROM and DVD products such as those mentioned above, the "GPO Access" program, and a growing collection of Internet accessible resources and files.

Examples of electronic government information are GPO Access, which among other resources includes complete texts of the Congressional Record and Federal Register, and World Wide Web homepages of depository libraries and government agencies, which serve as pointers to government information on the Internet.

Library Services

Reference

Reference service for government information in all formats is available to the public as well as to University of Illinois affiliates at the Government Documents reference desk.  For more information on the services we offer for information in electronic formats, see our Public Service Policy for Government Information in Electronic Formats.

As well as collecting print and electronic government information through the U.S., Canadian, United Nations, and Illinois depository programs, the Government Documents Library purchases a variety of specialized indexes to U.S. legislation, statistical resources, and other types of government information products.  Stop by the library between 9 and 5 on weekdays, call, or e-mail us for help using the library's resources.  The phone number for the reference desk is 217-244-6445.  Click here for E-Mail Reference or e-mail us at gdoclib@library.uiuc.edu.  E-mail is checked every day Monday - Friday, and we will usually respond to your question within one business day.  We also participate in the university library's Ask a Librarian online chat service on weekday afternoons.

Consultation

For more time-intensive questions or individual instruction in using government information sources, you can request a personal consultation using E-Mail Reference, or call 217-244-6445.  If you describe the question or topic you are working on and give times when you would be available to meet with a librarian, we can prepare the resources you will need.

Instruction

Arrangements can also be made for classroom or library presentations tailored to meet course needs.  See UIUC Course Assignments and Tutorials for some examples of course web pages that complemented previous presentations.  Please send inquires to Mary Mallory or call 244-4621.

Circulation

Most of the circulating government publications in the UIUC Library are housed in the Main Stacks.  For users of the Government Documents Library who do not automatically have access to the Main Stacks (see Bookstacks Access for a list of those who have access), permission to enter the Main Stacks can be obtained in Room 203 or at the Main Circulation Desk, or specific items can be requested at the Main Circulation Desk.

Materials checked out from the Main Stacks should be returned to them, or to the Main Library bookdrop. Fines and lost books from the Main Stacks should be dealt with through the billing office of the Central Circulation Department.

The Government Documents Library does circulate microfiche, DVDs and CD-ROMs. Items checked out from the Government Documents Library should be returned to the library to ensure proper discharge. Those with fines and lost books from the Government Documents Library should contact our circulation assistant at 333-8521.

Exhibits

The Government Documents Library mounts government information displays at the South end of the North/South corridor of the Main Library, first floor.  The library posts web pages for most exhibits: see Government Documents Library Exhibits for current and past exhibits.
