Digital Object Management Task Force

Governance:

The Digital Object Management Task Force reports to CAPT and is chaired by the Head of CAM. The group will coordinate its activities with other working groups and library departments, as warranted. Any proposals that the group develops requiring the development of supporting policies must be approved by CAPT after due consideration by other appropriate library bodies. Any proposals generated by the group that require funding for implementation must be referred to either the IT Advisory Committee or Library's Budget Group for funding approval. The chair of the working group is expected to update CAPT on its activities on a regular basis.

Charge:

The charge of the Digital Object Task Force is to assist the Library in developing more trusted digital repositories (with OAIS concepts) and create a more comprehensive search and discovery environment for the Library's digital collections. This will be accomplished by:

• Examining the Library's existing access systems for digital objects (including ContentDM, DLXS, DSpace, Olive, etc.) and determining if: (a) better     single option exists (such as Digitool) or (b) if the Library should pursue multiple options for managing and providing access to digital content (such as   a combination of Digitool, Olive, and DSpace).

• Investigating the full range of the Library's digital objects (and accompanying metadata) to determine how they fit into framework of our digital library infrastructure including large-scale digitization resources, brittle books, digital audio/visual files, electronic resources, learning objects, EADs, images, etc.

• Exploring the feasibility and implementation requirements of enterprise-wide digital object management software and convey to Library all that would be involved with implementing such a  system.

• Developing and forward software/system acquisition recommendations to CAPT.

• Exploring financial requirements of implementing enterprise-wide software solution to digital object access and management.

• Submitting a rport to CAPT for a detailed plan of action regarding access and management to the Library's digital resources by February 28, 2007.
