Main Databases

Chemical Abstracts / SciFinder Scholar UIUC
Chemical Abstracts, produced by Chemical Abstracts Service, a division of the American Chemical Society, is an index of journal articles, patents, technical reports, dissertations, conference proceedings, and books in many areas of the chemical sciences, including biochemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, applied chemistry, chemical engineering, macromolecular chemistry, and organic chemistry. In addition to the chemical sciences, Chemical Abstracts indexes information on agriculture, biology, engineering, geology, materials science, medicine, and physics.

Chemical Abstracts can also be searched via SciFinder Scholar, which can be accessed at the public access computers in the Chemistry Library.

Beilstein/Gmelin UIUC
Beilstein is an enormous database of information on organic chemistry. It includes information on over 8 million compounds, 9 million reactions, and indexes over 180 journals. Gmelin is a database of information on inorganic and organometallic chemistry. It has information on 1.6 million compounds, 1.3 million reactions, and indexes 61 journals. Beilstein and Gmelin can be accessed via the public access computers in the Chemistry Library, or by installing the Beilstein/Gmelin Crossfire client on your computer. Here are download instructions for MDL Beilstein/Gmelin Crossfire 7.0.

Additional help with searching Beilstein/Gmelin can be found at UW-Madison Library Beilstein Page. Also Check out the University of Pennsylvania Library's Beilstein CrossFire Tutorial.

Science Citation Index Expanded (Web of Science in ISI Web of Knowledge) UIUC
This resource allows you to find articles by author, title, or keyword, then gives you the opportunity to trace ideas and their influence by following both forward and backwards references to an article appearing in the scientific literature. This electronic version of Science Citation Index covers from 1980 to the present.

There are several free ways to learn more about using Web of Science; those interested can follow a tutorial, listen to recorded training sessions, or attend a live web-based training class.

Scopus (1960-present) UIUC
This is an abstract and citation database containing over 15,000 peer-reviewed journals from over 4,000 international publishers. Scopus also covers books, conference proceedings, web sites, reports, and patents.

For help on using Scopus, check out the interactive tutorials, the quick reference guide [pdf], the getting started materials [pdf], or the how it works section.
