BEL Appreciates Caterpillar
![]()
Caterpillar is one of the top industrial companies in the United States and happens to be located in Central Illinois.
Fitch Rating Service had this to say recently about Caterpillar, which rated the company an A+:
CAT is the world's leading manufacturer in construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines and industrial gas turbines. Other major businesses include Remanufacturing Services, Logistics, and Progress Rail. Through its financial products subsidiary, CAT provides retail-financing to its customers and dealers for the purchase and lease of CAT and non-competitive products. In the first half of 2007, 54% of CAT's consolidated sales were outside the U.S.
The ratings reflect CAT's consistently strong cash flow generation, competitive products, diversified customer base, global manufacturing footprint and strong international dealer network. The ratings are also supported by CAT's substantial financial flexibility, solid credit metrics and the strength and stability of CAT Financial, all of which give CAT the ability to absorb economic and product cycles.
(information taken from Mergent Online)
We appreciate Caterpillar for their partnership with the College of Business and in making it possible to have Bloomberg in our library. Bloomberg is used throughout the core curriculum in the Finance Department.

BEL Salutes Professor Neil Pearson
Today Professor Neil D. Pearson was given the Harry A. Brandt Distinguished Professor in Financial Markets and Options chair. To borrow language from Dean Avijit Ghosh's e-mail announcement,
" Professor Pearson, who joined the College in the Department of Finance in August 1995 as an assistant professor, is one of the country’s leading academic experts in the field of financial economics, particularly the growing sub-field relating to futures and options, derivatives trading and financial risk management. His research in this area is universally regarded for its creativity, its high quality and for the impact it has had on the discipline. In recognition of his excellent scholarship, the College appointed Professor Pearson as an IBE Fellow in Finance in 2002.The Harry A. Brandt Distinguished Professorship in Financial Markets and Options was established in 1987 by a gift from Harry A. Brandt to provide academic leadership, in the area of financial markets and options. A 1956 graduate of the College of Business, Harry Brandt served as the President of Brandt and Associates in Chicago, a firm specializing in processing transactions for options traders. The College is extremely grateful to Harry and Sharon Joyce Brandt for their support."
We join the Dean in congratulating Professor Pearson. He is one of BEL's regulars--often doing research on the Bloomberg terminal.

BEL Salutes: Professor David Ikenberry
Professor David Ikenberry is head of the Finance Department at UIUC's College of Business. Recently, UIUC News Bureau interviewed him and posted this story on their web site:
A Minute with David Ikenberry
David Ikenberry's research has focused on issues relating to stock-market returns as well as the informational efficiency of markets and the reasons why companies buy back their own stock. The growing influence of "activist stockholders" in corporate America has stirred fears that they are mostly speculators looking for quick profits at the expense of established companies. Ikenberry analyzes the background of these high-profile battles.
Read the rest here.
Professor Ikenberry is a good friend of BEL and has made it possible for our library to have Bloomberg.

BEL Salutes: Visiting Assistant Prof Laura Hanson
Today, bellogers said good bye to this blog's administrator, Visiting Assistant Professor Laura Hanson. Unfortunately, her position was not funded because of very competitive internal capital markets.
Professor Hanson made this blog a friendly place to visit, and for bellogers to post; likewise she completely re-designed the BEL web site, as well as the Industrial and Labor Relations website. While we gratefully acknowledge the re-design was based on some good survey research previously done by the ESSL and code borrowed, Professor Hanson created the look and feel of BEL appear as though it was our own in order to appeal to our clients--students, faculty, and onlookers. She included RSS feeds both in this blog and to our website to create value and draw readers to what belloger and BEL faculty colleague Yoo-Seong Song has coined, "the library killer app", which means more of our readers will find navigation through our information tsunmai a lot calmer and easy to do.
I was amazed all of the work that went into the graphics and the care of ensuring that our pages were so reachable by anyone. Some of the College of Business faculty gave our new web site accolades. We are pleased they like the new pages; most of the complements were about the look and feel.
She left us with excellent products. Professor Hanson will continue her career in Digital Librarianship. She is off to an excellent start, and we believe she will do very well.
Only bellogers know as well how Professor Hanson contributed to the training of our grad assistants, and how she answered many tough questions related to datasets.
From BEL staff and faculty-- thank you, Professor Hanson from the bottom of our minds and hearts.
From this belloger, Bon chance, Laura...hope you will connect with us when you can. BEL wasn't designed to be an alpha nor an omega for learning and relationship building.

BEL Salutes: Larry Neal, Economics
Larry Neal, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Economics recently received an excellence award From the Economic History Association. The link is to EHA databases of interest to economic historians since their program doesn't disclose this particular award receipent ahead, and I'm certain Professor Neal would want this link mentioned (instead).
bellog has obtained a presentation quote by Professor Ken Snowden of UNC Greensboro:
Tonight we recognize the recipient of the twelfth annual Jonathan Hughes Prize for Excellence in Teaching Economic History. The award is based on letters of support from students and colleagues, and an examination of the candidates teaching methods, materials and contributions. The goal is to identify and recognize dedication, commitment and excellence in the dissemination of economic history.
Congratulations, Professor Neal! Well deserved!
And thanks to another fellow librarian who provided the scoop to the bellogers about this honor!

BEL Salutes: Profs Carissa Holler and Yoo-Seong Song
Our BEL faculty have been busy teaching Bloomberg to several groups. One complement came through my e-mail last week, from a UIUC Distinguished Teacher in the department of Finance:
Your presentation of the Bloomberg system to the bankers from ABC Bank was a huge success. Each presentation created mew excitement and your inserting Chinese as the language to explain each screen was an excellent decision. Your ability to read the interest and needs of the Chinese bankers resulted in many wonderful discovery type learning experiences.Good going! Despite not feeling her best, Professor Holler still gave it all she had to do these presentations. Also your enthusiasic responses to the questions from each group created a natural excitement from the bankers. You have many wonderful characteristics that tell me you are going to be a great teacher!!
In addition, thanks to Professor Yoo-Seong Song who was with her on some of the sessions and contributed suggestions for searching Bloomberg on certain questions as well.
