Biology Web Directories

Open Directory Project. Provides over 18,000 generally appropriate biology sites selected and categorized by volunteers.

About.com. This site is a good place to go for basic, easy-to-understand information.

Academic Info: Biology & Biological Sciences Gateway.  Includes academic-level Web sites in a variety of subjects.

BioMedNetThis site requires free registration to access many of its features. Features include the science news magazine HMS Beagle and an annotated and ranked list of about 3,500 WebLinks.

Biozone.  A nice site from New Zealand; of interest to the general public and students. Has a directory of over 500 links with lots of good ecology/biodiversity sites.

HealthWeb.  This directory provides links to many biology sites in areas such as molecular biology or physiology, as well as health-related sites.

INFOMINE Comprehensive Biological, Agricultural, and Medical Resource Collection.   A venerable scholarly Web directory, with links selected by librarians. From the University of California-Riverside.

SciCentral: Gateway to the Best Science, Engineering, and Medical Resources Online. Provides news stories and numerous links categorized by subject and type. A good source for background information and news on a variety of topics.

Scientist Central. At the moment, only the biological sciences are covered in this directory, but there are plans to expand into other scientific fields. The organism directory is a useful feature.

BIOSIS.  Publishers of Biological Abstracts, site includes information on taxonomy and nomenclature and much more

NBII (National Biological Information Infrastructure).   "An electronic gateway to biological data and information maintained by federal, state, and local government agencies; private sector organizations; and other partners around the nation and the world."

NCBI (National Center for Biotechnological Information).  Access to Entrez, GenBank, PubMed, OMIM, others

NSF Grants & Awards.  Funding information and guidelines from the National Science Foundation

Illinois Researcher Information Service (IRIS). Provides a searchable database of funding opportunities in all fields of study.  Free to UIUC affiliates.

Libraries on the Web.  General information and links to online catalogs
