Instructions for Advanced Search in Biological Abstracts

Search by subject:

NOTE:  Click on Database Guide in maroon bar at top of page for Biological Abstracts field descriptions.

Search by author:

NOTE #1:  Names appear last name first, followed by the first name or initial, and are "bound" with hyphens. If you do search without hypens, search is treated as keyword search limited to the author field.   Authors first names are indexed just as they are published - either with first name initial or spelled out, with middle initial where applicable.  So to retrieve all titles that are indexed, you will need to do separate author searches - repeating the search with first name spelled out and then with it as an initial.  Use the truncation symbol (*) to retrieve variations of an author's name.  Author names may also be located in the General Index (link is in the right menu bar).

NOTE #2:  If your author search is unsuccessful, use the Index to check spelling and initials, etc; see instructions below.

Search by article title:

NOTE:  Click on Database in maroon bar at top of page for Biological Abstracts field descriptions.

Search by other fields (journal name, abstract, etc.):

NOTE: If your source (so) search is unsuccessful, check the journal name in the Index; instructions below.  If any keyword search is unsuccessful, use the Index to look for alternate spellings or forms of the word or phrase.

Truncation/Wildcards:

Use wildcard characters if you are uncertain of spellings or endings of words.

Boolean Operators:

Combine words or phrases with Boolean operators to expand spellings or endings or limit search.

Index (author names, scientific names, keywords):

Use the index to check for occurrence and spelling of author names, scientific names, journal names, or keywords in the Biological Abstracts

NOTE #1:  "Aspart" takes you into the index near "aspartame"
"canis lup" takes you into the index near "Canis lupus"
"journal of endoc" takes you into the index near "Journal of Endocrinology"

NOTE #2Click on terms in list to search them individually.  To search multiple terms, select them using the checkboxes, then click Search Marked..

Limiting searches (by year of publication, language, or other options):

Searches can be limited by year, document type, etc.

NOTE:  Limits remain in effect until you change the selected limits or click Clear.

Search History:

You can view and manipulate all searches done during the current session.  Your search history then appears in the bottom frame of the page as a list of all searches you have performed so far with links to the search results.  You can display retrieved records, rerun searches against new databases, automatically retype searches, combine multiple searches, edit searches, delete searches you no longer want, save your searches for future use, and load search histories you have already saved

Creation of SDI's:

NOTE:  The first time you'll need to choose your login / password.  To do this clickthe New User.  Your login must be your email address.  You choose your password.

NOTE:  You may set to send only when new results by selecting "Only send email if new results"

HINT:  In the comments box, you may want to indicate the name of the database the SDI is for, and something about the search or the search name, e.g., "CAB SDI: atpase and vacuol*;" which can be used for the email subject heading

Changing databases / Searching multiple databases at once:

You can change to another ERL WebSPIRS database  or search other ERL WebSPIRS databases (including AGRICOLA, CAB Abstracts, and Zoological Record) simultaneously.
