Industry Information

WWW U.S. Census Bureau--How to Find the Latest Business Data Links to annual, quarterly, and monthly business and economics reports produced by the Census Bureau. Includes the Annual Survey of Manufactures and County and Zip Code Business Patterns.
WWW Service Annual Survey This site supplies statistics on service industries. Provides annual estimates of the dollar volume of receipts for selected personal, business, social, health, and professional services at the United States level. For selected industries, separate estimates are given for receipts of taxable firms and revenues of firms exempt from Federal income taxes.

SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) Code A government tool that helps label products and industries. Enter industry or product type (not brand name). You may have to follow the broader categories, especially for industry overviews.
NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) A newer system designed to replace SIC, but many resources include options to search by either SIC or NAICS. Conversion between NAICS codes and SIC codes is available here.
UIUC Online Research Resources Associations Unlimited Contains information for approximately 460,000 international and U.S. national, regional, state, and local nonprofit membership organizations in many industries or fields.

Thomas Register of American Manufacturers Includes a list of American manufacturers, their major products, and contact information. Useful for looking for competitors and their products. The web version is free, but you must register online first.
WWW Association of University Technology Managers Nonprofit association with membership of more than 2,300 technology managers and business executives who manage intellectual property. AUTM's members represent over 300 universities, research institutions, teaching hospitals and a similar number of companies and government organizations. The link provided leads to the "products" that have been invented and out in the marketplace, such as Google and Taxol, a drug for treating cancer.
WWW United States Patent and Trademark Office Databases The USPTO has searchable databases via the web for patents and trademarks. Use the "How to..." sections to learn how to search the databases, as while they are rich in content, one can also get lost or receive many "false" hits. The Grainger Library also has links to other patent sites.
UIUC Online Research Resources Faulkner Advisory for IT Studies (FAITS) Contains more than 1000 clearly written reports covering all of the most important technology areas: data networking, broadband, information security, electronic government, electronic business, the Internet, business intelligence/content management, IT asset management, application development, mobile business, and wireless communications. The database also includes software and hardware vendor directories for the profiles they cover.
UIUC Online Research Resources ISI Emerging Markets This database supplies daily full-text news articles, financial statements, industry analyses, equity quotes, macroeconomic statistics, and market-specific information, which are derived directly from local information providers, appear in both English and the local language. The list of markets covered includes: Argentina, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Khazakhstan, Kyrgyztan, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, South Korea, Turkey, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Yugoslavia, and Venezuela.

EBSCO Business Source Complete (1984-current) Contains 2,804 full text scholarly journals and business periodicals covering management, economics, finance, accounting, international business, etc. More than 200 of the journals have PDF full text back to 1965 or the first issue published.
UIUC Online Research Resources LexisNexis Academic Universe Provides full text and abstracts of articles from newspapers, magazines, journals, wire services, trade journals, etc. Can search for specific industry news on over 25 industries.

Directory of Venture Capital Firms : Domestic & International Contains more than 2,500 venture capital firms. Each listing includes a mission statement, industry group and geographical preferences, portfolio companies, and investment criteria. A special feature in the book is a "College Index" which lists the educational institutions attended by executives employed at these firms.
WWW Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance This is a database of all Federal programs, some supporting small business innovation and start-up. Click on Search for Assistance Programs, then select "By Beneficiary," and finally select "Beneficiary type is 34-Small Business."
