University of Illinois Student Collections

University of Illinois Broadwalk, circa 1950

The University of Illinois student life and culture collections document student experience from UI's establishment as the Illinois Industrial University in 1867 through the twentieth century. Correspondence, minutes, reports, scrapbooks, photographs, publications, and sound recordings from individual students and alumni, student organizations, and student related offices on campus tell the story of what it meant to be a student throughout the 133 year history of the University.

In addition to documenting the history of the University of Illinois, these records provide fodder for understanding larger societal phenomena. Exploration of "student topics" such as town/gown relationships, student body composition, gender relationships on campus, student-faculty relations, and issues of "in loco parentis," allow insight into changing societal ideals and attitudes towards higher education and cultural values.
