RefWorks Service Imports and Customizes Online References, Automatically Formats Papers.
The Library is pleased to offer RefWorks, a web-based service that allows faculty and students to create their own working databases by importing references from online resources. They can then use these references in writing papers and preparing other documents, formatting the content and bibliography in the preferred citation style in mere seconds.
“RefWorks is a simple-to-use service,” explains Lisa Hinchliffe, the Library’s coordinator for information literacy services and instruction. “It increases writing productivity and accuracy in citation.”
RefWorks organizes reference material as it is imported, eliminating the need for separate note cards and paper files. It creates author, descriptor, and periodical name indexes for quick and easy information retrieval. It also provides both Quick Search and Advanced Search functions.
Offering features similar to EndNote, RefWorks provides a more user-friendly and easy-to-learn interface. Since it is a Web-based product, RefWorks requires no lengthy download or installation procedures. It is available from any location to faculty and students who use various Web browsers and computer systems.
RefWorks is available through collaboration with Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services (CITES). Lanny Arvan, assistant chief information officer for educational technologies, states, “We hope that instructors and students alike will find RefWorks easy to use and valuable as a bibliographic tool to assist in their research. We also hope that this project will serve as an emblem for further joint work between the Library and CITES.”
