Circulation Policies


    If you want to borrow library materials, please bring them with your ID card to the Circulation Desk.


    Loan periods for circulating materials vary as indicated below:
    Books:  4 or 16 weeks+
    Bound Journals:  No Circulation++
    Current Journals:  No Circulation++
    Reserves:  2 hours or overnight*
    Annuals, Yearbooks & Proceedings:  1 week USDA Publications 1 week  State Agriculture Experiment Station:  1 week  Microfilm & microfiche:  1 week CD-ROMs 4 or 16 weeks+

      + Undergraduates may borrow books for 4 weeks; graduate students and faculty for 16 weeks.

      ++ Periodicals may be charged from the library briefly for photocopying only.

      * In some instances, reserves may be borrowed overnight if charged within an hour of closing.


    Many items may be requested from campus libraries and other Illinet libraries through the Online Catalog. Local materials may be picked up at any campus library or mailed by the library to a campus office address. When you choose to have items mailed, you can expect to receive them within three working days. Items requested from other Illinet libraries usually arrive within five to ten working days. Under some circumstances, staff may be able to place a recall on charged items that you need.  

    To renew items before their due date, you may use the renewal option available through the Illinet Online Catalog.  To renew items past their due date, you should call the Telephone Center at (217) 333-8400.  If you do not return or renew items, then you will be subject to overdue fines and lost book billings.  All students and some other patrons will be fined according to the following schedule:

    Overdue fine rates:
    $10.00 after 34 days overdue
    $2.00 per hour on reserves
    $1.00 / day for recalled items plus a block  on library privileges

    Lost book rates:
    $125.00 minimum.  Fee is automatically assessed when an item is 34 days overdue and credited if the overdue item is returned in good condition.
