Message from the University Librarian: FY2003 Library Budget
As we all know, this has been an especially challenging budget year for the University. Thanks to Provost Richard Herman, the Library's budget was cut considerably less-1.5%-than other academic units, and some funds were made available to offset the inflationary prices of scholarly materials.
Although our bottom line budget figure did not change significantly, it does not adequately meet the increasing costs of materials. Additionally, it does not support certain unavoidable expenditures, such as union-negotiated raises, the new online catalog system, and the construction of our new high-density storage facility.
To address the budget problem, the Library is forced to cancel some serial subscriptions. We are making these decisions according to recommendations by department library advisory committees and other faculty. Likewise, we must eliminate purchases of some monographic materials.
Please be assured that during this time of fiscal restraint, the Library remains committed to bringing you high quality collections and services. As the year unfolds, we will work hard to make our limited dollars stretch as far as possible.
